The Twin Cities is keeping up with the Joneses. Here are two new rankings we received this past week:
Cooking Light Best Cities Award, Minneapolis is No. 4
- The magazine ranked major metropolitan areas on 15 criteria,
including healthfulness and exercise data, restaurant ratings, farmers'
market listings, and parks and recreation data. The result: 20 American
cities that best fit their philosophy to eat smart, be fit, and live well.
- The magazine credited Minneapolis' miles of trails, 22 lakes and four farmers' markets
- It called out such treasures as Spoonriver, Chambers Kitchen, Grand Rounds Scenic Byway and Minnehaha Park
Popular Science, America's 50 Greenest Cities, Minneapolis is No. 11 and St. Paul is No. 12
- PopSci used raw data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Geographic Society’s Green Guide and compiled the stats in four broad categories: electricity, transportation, green living and recycling and green perspective. The better a city does in those categories, the more points they receive.
- This is what the magazine had to say: "If you’ve got a world-saving idea, the City of Lakes will give you, your church or your community group the money to get it done. Twenty $1,000 mini-grants and five $10,000 awards were distributed last year to programs ranging from household power-consumption monitors to “block club talks” about global warming."
- St. Paul excels in recycling and electricity, while Minneapolis excels in transportation and green living.
