According to an article in the Star Tribune, Southwest Airlines is coming to MSP in March, connecting Chicago and the Twin Cities with up to 10 flights per day. The airline will fly from the Humphrey Terminal to Chicago Midway. In the fall issue of the magazine, I interviewed Metropolitan Airports Commission Executive Director Jeff Hamiel who talks about MAC's effort to court other airlines, such as Southwest, and bring them to the Twin Cities. (Read the Q & A for other insights from Hamiel about the future of business travel and the reputation of our airport.)
This is huge news. While this is the only route Southwest is planning to and from the Twin Cities for now, perhaps if this goes well, we'll see more? I have to say, Southwest's commericals grab me with their cheaper fairs and Halleluia choruses in celebration of the first two bags being checked at no extra cost. I think this is happening at the perfect time, and could be just what our airport needs to remain competitive. What do you think?
