Minnesota and the Twin Cities have always been a hot bed for arts activities. We have award-winning theater, dance and music companies, we have a high number of writers, we're looked upon favorably for our creative agencies -- we invest, work and participate in the arts to almost an extreme. That's why it's no surprise that the new data from the National Endowment for the Arts highlights Minnesota in a few categories. Here are a few of the findings:
+ The more than 2 million artists in the U.S. make up nearly 7 percent of the professional workforce. In the last decade, the artist workforce increased by 5 percent.
+ Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maryland, Washington, Nevada, Minnesota, and New Jersey each surpass the U.S. level of artists in the workforce.
+ Minnesota, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey have the top four highest employment concentrations in book publishing. We're No. 1 on that list.
+ The Minneapolis metro area relies much more heavily on book publishing than other metro areas. The concentration of employment in Minneapolis’ book-publishing industry is nearly 8 times the national average.
+ Employment concentration in the theater industry is twice the U.S. average in the Seattle, Minneapolis/St. Paul/Bloomington, and San Diego areas.
